I have been writing for the better part of my life, at a rough estimate, some twenty-five years. While recently, the vast majority of my writing has been in the arena of fan fiction, I do occasionally write entirely original material. For the last two years, I have taken advantage of the National Novel Writing Month challenge (NaNoWriMo for short) to begin work on two different novels. Actually, that's not quite accurate.
In November of 2005, I began work on a "supernatural suspense novel" (that never sounds right on the page, I don't know why) called STRANDED. While I did make progress on the book during the month, real life derailed my writing efforts, and I have yet to pick it up again. Although I very much want to - I still think it's a damned cool story.
In November of 2006, I began work on a science fiction trilogy (and got much farther on it, although I still did not successfully complete NaNoWriMo 2006) known as the APOCALYPSE RISING trilogy. Book I, called THE NEPHILIM SCRIPTURES, was the one I began for NaNoWriMo (I then went on to outline Books II and III).
I have to admit, writing THE NEPHILIM SCRIPTURES is a lot more fun - I just found myself getting more into that one. (I also have it mentally cast in my mind - oh, don't I wish I could actually get this thing written as a screenplay and up on the big screen.)
STRANDED
Graduate student Matthew Davidson jerks awake from a nightmare, and at first, thinks nothing of it. Nightmares happen all the time - but they're not real. But this one is... and this time, he can't wake up from it.
It starts with small things that he doesn't remember - a speeding ticket he can't remember getting, or a doctor's appointment he can't remember making. A t-shirt his girlfriend gave him for Christmas is missing, but a book he'd thought lost turns up on his bookshelf.
Then he starts noticing the big things - like the fact that his girlfriend claims they broke up three years ago... and that his best friend of ten years never existed.
As events start slipping further and further out of his control, Matthew must reconcile his memories with the reality he finds himself trapped in, until his memories are the only thing left that hold the fabric of reality together.
APOCALYPSE RISING: The Nephilim Scriptures
"IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD..."
In the distant future, humanity has made great strides into space, discovered new worlds and new races, and made new enemies. And in the far reaches of space exists a single world that has no allegiances - New Alexandria.
New Alexandria, like its namesake, is a library; more specifically, it is a planetwide repository for a copy of every religious and mystical text in existence. Tended by the Order of St. John of the Cross, it is has been designated by every civilized race in the galaxy as 'off limits.' Wars have been waged all around it, but New Alexandria has always remained untouched. But now a new war is about to begin... on New Alexandria itself.
For legends and prophecies on a hundred different worlds speak of a time when the gathering of words will undo the creation brought about by the Word. Already unseen forces are moving to find the words scattered throughout the texts on New Alexandria.
Four men and women of the Order of St. John of the Cross - Michael, Gabrielle, Thomas, and Johanna - leave New Alexandria in search of the truth, tracing the origins of the books to their original homeworlds. But there are those who don’t wish them to succeed, and even worse, those who do… but for their own twisted and fanatical ends...
